100% sure, pine siskins. We get a lot of them here in Washington state, as well as goldfinches, and Ihave no doubt that you've got pine siskins there. Have fun with your new hobby!

Sorry for the delay in replying but we've been super busy. This blog has languished a bit the last few months. I've been dividing my limited time up in too many pieces and this blog has suffered. Hoping we can update it a bit more here in the near future. I took a look at your blog and you have quite a collection of pictures. Good job! I'll add the blog to my blogroll.

pine siskins I think, I have a ton too, it seems like the pattern the wings make when folded is so clear to me, it looks kind of braided, with the black feathers tipped in light brown. I also have a variety that looks absolutely identical with a gold bar across the wings, anyone know what this is?

Yeah, in tight quarters especially, the smaller birds have an advantage. I think the hawks rely almost completely on the element of surprise. If they don't get the smaller bird in the first attempt the odds of success drop very quickly. It's certainly an interesting sight, especially when it happens only 10 feet away from you.

Glad you found us!

So far the suet recipe seems to be a backyard favorite. The birds are gobbling it up and it doesn't look like it's melting in the 90 degree Atlanta heat. I've got to make more already!

I had a hawk do something in my back yard as well. http://wiredpresentations.com/2009/05/29/a-new-kind-of-housing-problem/

Just yesterday I was riding to work to photography a fawn that was hanging around our building and I saw another Cooper's Hawk chasing a bird. Luckily for the small bird the hawk has a wide turn radius.
