I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to numbers and things like that. If you ask Pam, she’ll say I’m a BIG GEEK. Well, when it comes to the weather, keeping track of it is fun. The weather is constantly changing and the birds and other wildlife are affected by it greatly. It’s amazing how the animals seem to know when bad weather is coming and adjust their activity accordingly. So, keeping track of the weather if you’re a birder makes a lot of sense.
I’ve had a weather station or indoor/outdoor thermometer for a number of years but I “upgraded” to a Davis Vantage Pro-2 Wireless weather station a couple of years ago and haven’t looked back. It gives me just about all of the weather info I could want and it wirelessly communicates with the base station and my computer, allowing me to upload the data to Weather Underground. Once it’s uploaded everyone can see what the weather is like right in our own backyard. It’s pretty cool.
This is the current weather in our backyard. You can click on the image and be taken to Weather Underground and the page that shows all of our weather station’s data going back to January, 2007 which is when we set it up.
If you have a backyard weather station and would like to share a link to your current weather please contact me Mark@birdsinyourbackyard.com and I will add the link here.
